Why Oil and Gas Workwear Needs to Be Specified, Not Just Supplied

Oil and gas workers face multiple simultaneous hazards: flash fire and hydrocarbon ignition, static electricity during pumping and loading, chemical splashes, low-light vehicle traffic, and extreme weather from desert heat to offshore winter wind. A single workwear item usually cannot solve every risk, so HAIYUAN builds oil and gas workwear specifications around the actual workplace requirement rather than a one-size-fits-all garment.

Because standards differ by country and by site, this page explains the main hazard-to-product choices used for oilfield, refinery, gas-plant and maintenance programs. HAIYUAN’s team can help match a garment configuration to your risk assessment and provide the relevant test reports and certification documents for your order.

Hazard assessment

Oil and Gas Workplace Hazards and the Right Workwear Response

Matching hazards on energy sites with HAIYUAN oil and gas workwear options
Workplace hazard Typical exposure Workwear response
Flash fire / ignition Drilling, well testing, gas processing, hot work near hydrocarbons Flame-retardant clothing that will not melt, drip or continue burning; 100% cotton FR styles such as TZ161, SF8055 and TZ162
Static electricity Fuel transfer, tank loading, enclosed areas with flammable vapors Anti-static clothing with conductive fiber grid and fast charge dissipation; styles tested to GB 12014 or EN 1149
Chemical splash Acid and alkali handling, drilling fluids, process chemicals, H2S-affected areas Acid- and alkali-resistant suits with seam sealing and liquid repellency, e.g. TZS13-15 and TZ2067
Low light / vehicle traffic Night loading, rig moves, road transport, equipment yards Fluorescent high-visibility clothing with wide reflective trim; EN ISO 20471 / EN 17353 referenced styles
Cold, wind and rain Offshore decks, northern fields, winter inspections and pipeline work Waterproof, windproof hi-vis outerwear with TPU membrane and insulation for non-spark zones
Abrasion and tool contact Maintenance, pipe handling, workshop and tank farm work Reinforced seams, utility and tool pockets, wear-resistant cotton or polyester-cotton fabrics

Important: insulated or fleece outerwear is not flame-retardant unless the configuration says so. For example, HAIYUAN’s winter polar-fleece hi-vis suit is intended for cold outdoor work and must not be worn in welding or spark-producing zones. Always select the FR layer first, then add cold-weather or chemical layers that fit the site’s layering rules.

Sector guidance

Oil and Gas Workwear by Sector: Upstream, Midstream and Downstream

Upstream – Drilling & Well Services

Rig crews, well-service and workover teams need FR protection around ignition sources plus anti-static performance for flammable atmospheres. Breathability matters in hot field work.

Midstream – Pipelines, Pump Stations & Terminals

Pipeline maintenance, compressor-station and terminal staff work around fuel transfer and road traffic. High visibility plus static control is often the starting specification.

  • Anti-static hi-vis split suits: YJ-8021
  • Reflective trim visible at night (200 m in selected styles)
  • Cold-weather hi-vis waterproof outerwear: WD253
  • Color options for fluorescent green, yellow and orange

Quality assurance

Quality Control Behind Oil and Gas Workwear Orders

Protective workwear only works when the fabric, seams, accessories and final garment are consistent from batch to batch. HAIYUAN’s production process includes six documented control stages:

  1. Raw material tests – incoming fabrics are checked before cutting
  2. Accessory quality – zippers, threads, reflective tape and hardware are selected for durability
  3. Performance tests – tear strength, abrasion resistance, flammability, acid/alkali resistance, discoloration, odor, moisture wicking, water resistance and breathability
  4. Production quality management – in-line checks under the company’s quality system
  5. Final product inspection – each coverall is checked against customer requirements
  6. Packing inspection – garments are verified before carton packing and shipment

Third-party reports and LA/certification documents for protective styles can be provided for order confirmation. See the full HAIYUAN safety workwear product range →

FAQ

Oil and Gas Workwear: Frequently Asked Questions

Do you manufacture FR anti-static workwear for oil and gas companies?

Yes. HAIYUAN’s range includes cotton anti-static flame-retardant coveralls (TZ161), high-visibility FR anti-static protective clothing (SF8055) and pure-cotton FR hi-vis coveralls (TZ162). The final garment should be selected against the site hazard assessment and required standard.

Which standards should oilfield or refinery workwear meet?

Common references are GB 8965.1 for flame-retardant clothing, GB 12014 or EN 1149 for anti-static performance, EN ISO 20471 / EN 17353 for visibility, and GB 24540 for acid and alkali protection. Export orders may also require EN ISO 11612, EN ISO 13688 or market-specific documentation. HAIYUAN confirms the applicable standard and supporting documents for each configuration.

What is the difference between HAIYUAN oil and gas workwear and ordinary cotton work clothes?

Protective styles use fabric with flame-retardant treatment that will not melt or drip under flame, anti-static garments weave conductive fiber into the fabric to dissipate charge, and hi-vis styles use fluorescent backgrounds plus reflective trim. Ordinary cotton or polyester-cotton work clothes are not automatically FR or anti-static.

Can you add our company logo, employee names and reflective tape?

Yes. HAIYUAN provides embroidery, heat transfer printing, screen printing, Velcro options and custom reflective tape. Logo placement can be arranged on the front chest, back or sleeves, and branded labels and packaging are available.

Can we order a sample before bulk production?

Yes. Customized samples are typically completed within 3–7 days after the design and materials are confirmed. A sample order lets your team verify fabric, sizing, logo and finish before bulk production begins.

What information do you need for an oil and gas workwear quotation?

Provide the garment type, quantity, target market, required protection and standards, fabric preference, size range, branding details, destination country and target delivery date. HAIYUAN will recommend a specification and confirm MOQ, sampling and lead time.
